Jasmine

Journeyman Barber / Stylist

After putting hair on the floor for over 20 years now, I love it more today than I did in the beginning. It's like a romance that evolved from a casual courtship to a lifetime commitment. The more I learn, the deeper I fall in love.

Barbering is an old and interesting story, and I'm fascinated with the history and tradition of it. I like feeling that I'm part of something that was born long before me, and will live on, long after I'm gone. I like to think I'll have my own chapter in the story of the world's (second) oldest profession.

Women can do all sorts of creative things with makeup and fashion, while men have somewhat limited options for self-expression, a man's haircut and facial hair can change his whole appearance and the way he feels about himself. A man who looks good and feels good about himself will be a better man all around. Being a part of that gives me a deep sense of satisfaction. I'm honoured every day, that the men who sit in my chair, trust me and allow me the privilege of serving them. I'm very proud of my small place in the boy's club!

Brenda

Senior Stylist

Hi there. I'm Brenda. I'm the elder of the beautiful, talented ladies at Modern Men Salon, But by no means the longest years of service.

Life happened, and after 25 years of marriage, I was on my own. No job, no education. I thought of myself as somewhat of an artist, painting watercolour, acrylic painting and beaded jewelry. I Was pretty sure I wouldn't pay a lot of bills that way, so my sister-in-law said to me one day why don't you go to beauty school, you have always wanted to. I thought well, that is artistic. So even at my age, I did my research and found a school I felt comfortable at. On my first day at school, all the young girls thought I was the teacher. It was perfect timing. I graduated and got work immediately.

Since I have an artistic background, I automatically thought I would love doing ladies' colours. I did learn that I liked it but didn't love it. The education of men's hair was very minimal at school, and barbering was not offered. But that's where I shined. My real education came right after school, taking men's cutting classes, making mistakes and figuring out what not to do, but also watching my very talented coworkers that I have tremendous respect for, and learning from them.

I don't even know how to express how much I love my clients. I have so much fun every day going to work, it's my social life. My guys are the best. I love transforming them. Some come from work looking like busmen and leave looking like GQ models. I also can't forget about my special lady clients. My first salon at Chatters is where I met some wonderful lady clients that will be with me forever, and that has helped me keep the doors open in the early stages of Modern Men. I was only known just to do ladies' short hair; some are scared that I will kick them out if they start growing out their hair. That will never happen.

All and all, I'm blessed to have the amazing clients in my chair and to share the great atmosphere of our modern-day barbershop Modern Men Hair Salon.

Raylyne

Apprentice Stylist

I’m Raylyne Korzenowski, I have been doing hair for a total of 4 and a half years, have been with Modern Men for 3 and a half years. Modern Men was my first job as school finished. We did a salon tour there, I never really had an interest in doing men’s hair until I stepped into this salon and met Tammy our owner and boss. She carried herself with such a positive glow and believed in making a future on making men look the best and feel confident in themselves. I was inspired by hearing her goals of what she wanted for not only her salon, but her staff. I remember that day like it was yesterday.

It didn’t take long before I knew that I wanted to do men’s hair and be a part of Tammy’s team. I in fact emailed her that day to ask if she was hiring. Tammy had just taken over the business recently and had never hired a new person before. We instantly hit it off and I was so blessed she took a chance on someone fresh out of school. I have enjoyed every day and minute of working here and can’t wait for what the future holds.

I love Christmas, my Volkswagen beetle, and my two cats. When I’m not working in the salon, I enjoy fitness, sports, painting, and watching hockey. Working in our salon is like having a second family. Coming to work is a safe zone knowing you will always be able to rely on your coworkers and client’s if you are having a rough go.

Having clients, you have come to know makes work a lot better. You would not be here if you did not have the client’s that you have. Also, knowing you have created forever friendships with them makes is a great feeling. Your clients find comfort in you, tell you things that they probably wouldn’t tell most people. You really get to create that solid bond with them and they trust you. There is nothing better than not only making your client look good when they leave, but also being a safe zone for them even if its just to vent about their day.

The best thing about this industry is that you never stop learning. You are constantly learning from online, as well as watching your coworkers work their magic and learning from them. At the end of the day this is a team game and there is no I in team.

Bereket

Apprentice Barber specializing in Habesha Mens Haircuts

I am originally from Eritrea Africa and I can remember from the young age of 15 I was put in charge of cutting family and friends hair! It was something I was naturally good at and have always aspired to be better. I knew I had a passion for barbering that wouldn’t let me go.

In 2012 I moved to Canada, and in 2013 I had the privileged to spend 6 months cutting hair at a quaint but busy barber shop in Winnipeg called Cavalier Barber Shop. It was predominantly Habesha hair, so I have developed quite the skill set in cutting African hair! I had all this experience before I officially took my Diploma training at the Style Academy in Regina, 2018. This gives me a very good foundation as a new apprentice Barber with years of experience holding the clippers.

I am happy to say that I do speak 4 languages; Tigrigna, Amharic, Arabic and my English is coming along nicely! I feel very appreciative that I can fill the demand of an experienced Barber for the growing Ethnic population in Regina and surrounding area.

In July of 2019 I started full time apprenticing at Modern Men Salon in Regina. I am working under the supervision of Jasmine who is training me to have a more advanced skill set for traditional barbering. I truly enjoy shaving and am very happy to be a part of the developing Team of the Modern Men Salon’s “Queen City Barbers” who are taking the Men’s grooming experience to the next level of quality service!

I am offering incentives to new clients in my chair. Every new client or referral who sits in my chair will get an entry ballot for a chance to win a free haircut and hot towel shave experience! I will do a draw once a week for a limited time!
